Hello. My name is Tim Zaegel, and I’ve been writing the NASCAR column at www.doyounascar.com for the B5 Media Channel since October, 2007 delivering you everything from the latest news in the world of NASCAR to giving you weekly fantasy previews for the Sprint Cup Series and also offering my insightful opinion on a variety of topics.
I originally grew up in St Louis, MO. Believe it or not, for some reason that’s just an area of the midwest that was never particularly hammered with NASCAR fever. I really attribute the lack of a large fanbase in St Louis mostly to under-exposure to the sport. See, St Louis didn’t receive its first Busch / Nationwide Series race until 1997, and at that time, the tracks in Chicago and Kansas were not yet built. So, the closest NASCAR track was in Indianapolis which meant a good 5 or 6 hour drive. Needless to say, I didn’t grow up a huge racing fan, but I was a huge sports nut in general, so it was only a matter of time.
In 2000, I joined the US Marine Corps and was stationed in North Carolina - the heart of NASCAR Nation. It wasn’t long before I started watching it on tv with my brother and eventually started attending one or two races a year, though all it took was seeing the action live in Martinsville for the first time to get me completely and utterly hooked. Since that day, I’ve spent countless hours not only following the sport in its form today, but also the history of NASCAR and what it took to get the sport to its current state.
I now live out in Virginia by my brother, who also writes the fishing blog for B5 at www.gettingreel.com, and it seems I’m once again back in an area that thrives on NASCAR - which bodes well for me.
