“On the Ball” at the Business Channel!

My three year old daughter joined her first team this year: she is playing soccer. I will admit to trying to talk her into dance class or something a little less exciting but I didn’t succeed. I personally love soccer (I played as a kid) but my daughter is small for her age and a little, we’ll call it “sensitive”, so I was a bit worried.

While she has not yet proved herself to be a Mia Hamm in the making, I am really glad that we let her play. She’s learned a lot about the game and how teams function. She understands that the kids in the same color shirt as she wears (yellow, in case you’re wondering) are on her team. She knows that they are ostensibly all headed for the same goal (if you’ve ever watched 3-5 year old kids play soccer, you understand). And more or less she runs alongside her teammates, arms and legs flailing, while the game goes on.

Watching her enjoy the game in her own unique style has reminded me that there is joy in sports - and we can all take something from the game. Whether you like the idea of working with a team, or achieving by yourself, we can all learn a little something from sports to use in our “real” lives. Our Business Channel makes a go of it this week by focusing on sports - with a nod to the recently revived Sports Channel at b5.
