Mike’s journey into game journalism was a long one. He was weaned on the Atari 2600, grew up with the Nintendo Famicom, faced puberty with the Sega Genesis, and was able to get his hands on every significant console and gaming PC in all generations.
This gamer was also an avid reader of Electronic Gaming Monthly in the late 80s, and has always wondered if there was a career in videogames. No, he didn’t want to make games—Mike wanted to play and write about them. Unfortunately, all the action was happening in the U.S., not the Philippines. Was there hope for this aspiring game journalist?
Little did he know.
The Philippines’ game journalism scene circa 2003 was still in its infancy when Mike got his foot in the door via Sumodownload. There were local magazines that featured a couple of game reviews per issue, but not much else. For a while, it looked as if nobody was out there.
Mike got his second games journalism gig when he joined PC Magazine Philippines as its resident game guru. He met kindred spirits when he joined the Asian Gaming Journalists Association.
He learned he wasn’t alone.
