Oh hey. I’m Matt, a 20-something in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, IL, and coincidentally enough, I’m writing The Chicago Traveler. I’ve spent a lot of time all over the city, mostly because I’m usually lost. I swear I have the sense of direction of a plastic bag in the wind.
I was born and raised here in the Windy City, growing up in the Humboldt Park and Ukrainian Village neighborhoods with two younger brothers. I’m sure my folks are quite happy to know that I’m finally using that piece of paper I got from college. If studying in the Colorado wilderness taught me anything, it’s that I really am meant to be an urbanite.
I’ve always enjoyed writing, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a couple of short stories and a few poems published over the years. I’m currently a board member of NewTown Writers, a group which holds fortnightly workshop-style meetings where members share works-in-progress.
When I’m not writing about Chicago, I like to *gasp* travel to other cities. I know; can you believe it? I usually visit friends in Las Vegas and one other U.S. city every year. No city has lured me away from the City of Big Shoulders just yet though. I also try to keep up to date on current events and politics; in school, I was on the board for one activism group and co-president of another. My mother’s joked about how one day she’s going to see me on television being dragged away from a rally by police. To keep myself out of trouble,
I do a lot of reading, writing in my 6-year-old personal blog, and singing and playing guitar when I know no one will hear me (even though I spent two years in a mariachi band). I also like to play pool, throw darts, and go bowling, despite the fact that I’m not very good at any of the three.
Hopefully, you’ve gotten to know a little bit about me, and I’ll be able to show you a little bit about Chicago. Feel free to send me an e-mail if you’ve got a question, comment, or good map recommendation to keep me from getting lost.
