Maple Leaf Two Onboard!

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted on the b5 main blog. The Tech Channel has been humming along nicely and we’ve all been enjoying the relative sanity of writing blogs instead of launching blogs. All that changes today.

I’m happier than heck to welcome Mark Evans to b5 Media. Mark is a Senior Technology Reporter with one of Canada’s national newspapers, The National Post. Mark is bringing his existing Maple Leaf Two blog over to b5, which is going to fill a nice niche in the Tech channel. Maple Leaf Two is a blog about all things Web 2.0 in Canada and I can honestly say that I had no idea how much good stuff was going on in Canada in that space. Sad, really, since I live in Calgary, Alberta.

Please join me in welcoming Mark to b5 Media and check out Maple Leaf Two!

Well .. I’ll be looking forward to reading Mark’s blog .. as I personally think the National Post is a waste of Canada’s resources - Paper .. but, there are some great writers there.

PS .. I hope the fact that the site is unaccessable for I.E.7 viewers isn’t a permanent issue - and hopes to be resolved soon! Yuucch .. I wish you guys would fix your templates. TIA.

Hart,

I wasn’t aware that we had a template issue with IE7. Probably because I’m a Linux user. However, can you send me a screenshot, or expand on how the site is inaccessible? I’d appreciate it.

Feel free to fire it off to me at jon @b5media .com

Hi Jon .. // inaccessible is not the correct word .. I should have used “visually unacceptable” .. The site is accessible, but there is no header graphic, the titles and sections are in white and hardly show up on the opaque background, and the bottom half black meshes with the middle column’s on the longer permanent posts only (otherwise it’s fine). Other than that, the white and red Canadian colors works for this ‘Pegger.

My biggest peeve is the header - there is nothing available to click on to return to the home/start page. I could use Firefox, but I don’t. I follow new posts in my Bloglines, in IE7 browser .. it’s such a familiar problem with new b5 blogs that’s starting to slightly irritate me. There are sites out there that test how a site will look on all browsers.

Seems OK to me in IE7. I know that’s not what you want to hear. I put this little video together just to make sure that we’re on the same page.

If I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying, let me know and I’ll investigate further.

Listen .. All I was trying to do was help. Maybe your readers will think you sounded like a dick, but I thought you sounded a little more like the condescending boss Bill Lumbergh from OFFICE SPACE movie :P

But, I subscribed to your YouTube videos anyway :D

Actually - it’s true .. I have IE7beta2 installed. I’m not going to waste any more of my time trying to prove that I’m right or your wrong .. if you had checked that it worked in all browsers and all versions (instead of disputing a valued reader) - you would have seen what I had seen .. Here’s one glimpse - that’s all Thank-You.

Hart, that looks like the preview 1 of beta 2 (ie: not even beta 2 yet). An issue that there really isn’t a fix for (except upgrading to the official beta 2, or to the recently released beta3).

I’m sure Jon didn’t mean to come across as condescending. But, we did test in every major browser (both IE7 betas, firefox, opera, IE6, safari, IE for mac, etc).

That doesn’t mean their can’t be issues, just that Jon was right to be surprised. Obviously if you’d like we’d be happy to work with you further to resolve it, as we’d hate to have an advanced tech blog inaccessible to advanced tech readers!

Jon on July 6th, 2006 at 15:13

Did I sound condescending? Seriously?

Wow..that totally wasn’t my intent. I thought a video would be much better than a snippy “Works for me” type response.

I guess I need an editor to vet these things before I post ‘em.

HART (1-800-HART) on July 6th, 2006 at 15:23

*sigh NO I didn’t say that you were ondescending ..
YES I said that you SOUNDED like that Gary Cole character .. that condenscending boss (If you aren’t familiar with the movie - never mind) .. Mmm yes .. I’m going to have to ask you to move your desk into the basement

I guess ME BAD. (and please don’t make me explain any more jokes)

FYI .. my IE is version 7.0.5296.0 Beta 2 … I’ll go rush out and upgrade now.

Jon on July 6th, 2006 at 15:30

Ah, OK - good.

I caught the reference and assumed that since I sounded like him that you were saying…

My head hurts now. I’m leaving.

HART (1-800-HART) on July 7th, 2006 at 03:52

FYI // now upgraded to IE version 7.0.5450.4 Beta 3 and can see everything fine.

But, it was a complete uninstall and new install for the beta upgrade .. Quite aggrevating - I would NOT recommend it to others just to see the site(s). My biggest complaint is that I use the wordpress bookmarklets for blogging .. Now, with beta3 if I press LINK button, I get the popup crasher and the post refreshes, deleting everything I did before. I’m currently adding a dummy link before and ‘temporarily allowing’ it then doing the post.

If anybody is aware of that issue and knows a fix .. please let me know! T.I.A.
