When I think “blog” I think logos–that is, the Classical Greek word that gives us the -log in blog and that means “account, tale, explanation, argument, reason,” and much more. And those meanings of logos are exactly what blogging is about, posting up-to-the-minute accounts and tales across the digital cosmos (another Classical Greek word, meaning “world order” and “universe”).

I started blogging in June 2005 to tell the story that is the biggest in my life, the story of my son, Charlie, who has autism. My first blog, My Son Has Autism, was on Blogger and, in December 2005, I migrated to Typepad and rechristened my blog Autismland thanks to the encouragement of Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei.

So when Hsien asked me about writing for b5media, I wrote back “yes!” immediately. I hope that Autism Vox is a place to advocate for the best education and other services for children and adults all over the autism spectrum. I blog about autism and science, culture, education and politics, all from my “soapbox” as an autism mother. I’m writing a book about autism, Charlie, our family, and classical mythology.

Yes, classical mythology. I’m a classicist, a professor of ancient Greek and Latin, at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey. I studied classics at Princeton University and received my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Classics from Yale University, and have taught at universities in the Midwest and Northeast for the past ten years plus. I published a translation of the Roman poet Virgil’s Georgics in 2002 and am also researching disability in the ancient world, in ancient medicine, philosophy and literature. And, I just began a translation of Virgil’s Eclogues.

I chose the word vox for the title of Autism Vox because vox and the -voc- in advocate share the same Latin root word, voco, “I call.” While “Autism Vox” literally means “Autism Voice,” by no means is this blog meant to be the “voice of autism.” There are many blogs by autistic authors that are all about autism from the inside out. As the mother of Charlie, my son who has autism, I am called everyday to translate his sometimes garbled speech and his needs. I am called to action and to advocate, and I believe that blogging on Autism Vox will help to spread the word.
