Introducing Inside the Ballpark with Hunter Pence
We have a new addition to the b5media Sports Channel — Inside the Ballpark with Hunter Pence.
This new blog features major league baseball player Hunter Pence of the Houston Astros. We are very excited about Hunter joining us on the b5media Sports Channel.
Hunter will personally pen a weekly blog post to detail the latest happenings in his life as an Astro. Additionally, this blog will be updated on a daily basis to keep everyone updated on Hunter and the Astros. Hunter is entering his second season for the Astros after completing a very successful rookie season. As a rookie, Hunter hit .322 with 17 homeruns and 69 RBIs. He also collected 30 doubles, nine triples and 11 stolen bases.

Pence was born April 13, 1983, in Fort Worth, Texas and attended the University of Texas at Arlington. He was drafted in the second round by the Astros in 2004. His breakout year in the minor leagues came in 2006 when he hit 28 homers and had 95 RBIs for the AA Corpus Christi Hooks. Pence made his major league debut on April 28th, 2007. Despite missing a month with a chipped bone in his wrist, he finished as one of the best rookies in all of the major leagues.

If you haven’t listened to them yet, you should really listen to a band called Vendetta Red (particularly “The Body and the Blood” and “Caught You Like a Cold”. I have a sign that reads “#9’s #1 FAN!” which you signed for me one day before a game. I also have a sign that says “Help Us, Hunter!” which you also signed. My favorite sign I have, though, is a black one that has “PENCE…” (in bubble letters) “…9th WONDER OF TEXAS!”
I made it while you were on the D.L. because of your wrist sprain. You laughed and smiled when you saw it, and pointed it out to some of your buddies in the dugout.
I asked you to sign a baseball “To my #1 fan” and you did, which may have been the highlight of my year! :)

We drove to Dallas to Fla. to see the Astros play in Dodgertown. My little boy waved to you a couple of times and you came over to him, signed his hat and posed for a picture, you truly made his spring break. When you came up to bat, he said I hope he hits a homer and sure enough you did. It goes to show that good things happen to good people. Thanks so much for making my son’s spring break the best ever. Hunter, I am the National Service Director for the Wounded Warrior Project. I was told many stories by the warriors that were severely burned about your visit to Brooke Army Medical Center. The warriors had great stories about the visit and your compassion for their sacrifice.
The reason for this is the hope that you can assist me. The burn survivors are unable to attend manyy events due to the sun in Texas. However, if you were able to assist me, I would be happy to drive them from San Antonio to Houston for some games if it were possible to provide them with an area they could sit without being directly in the sun. They are sometimes worried about being stared at, due to the severe burns they received.

Hey Hunter! Great past couple of games. I was born and raised in the Houston area and actually just caught Astros fever.
I’m writing because I need your help and this seems the only way I can HOPE to get it. My now ex and I have been having relationship problems for a few months now. We love each other immensly but things just have been overwhelming. I still love her with all my heart though. Alright Hunter. I do believe we need to have a talk. The team hasn’t been doing well the past few weeks and though the hits keep coming we never seem to score. However I’m quite astonished at how many times you’ve struck out swinging. Your average has sadly dropped, and though you continue to try and put in great effort it seems as though when you’re at the plate you swing at anything just to try to get something. I’m not a pro at baseball knowledge or the best strategic plays but I know when something needs to change. You have been looking frustrated cause I see the anger. I hope however that you let it drop and try to make the next play or at bat worth while. Its not all you though. Pitching has plumetted to a real low. Not to mention the problems we have with Angel Hernandez. I’m not writing to tell how bad its going. Cause you still seem to have the heart. When you do get a hit you run hard and through, you jump to reach the almost impossible and catch it. Not to mention you have almost every girl in the city drooling over you including me. I’m praying for a miracle and I hope it comes soon. This team is the world and the most support I’ve put into something that I watch. I want yall to make it. I would love to discuss this topic or the team more than I can type here. I do wonder how often you check this. But continue to put your right foot foward. I noticed that you tend to pull the ball a lot and this is hurting your batting average. I’m sure you get advice from a lot of people but I am surprise that Sean Berry has not recommended to you to try bunting for hits. With your speed you should be able to beat out a lot of hits. By also doing this as you know you will pull in the third baseman. By doing this you will have a better chance of getting more hits through the left side because the third baseman is playing in.
One other suggestion — try hitting to right field more often. Trust me, you will get a lot more hits. PLUS you have the power to hit homeruns to right just as well.

Hey Hunter,
I enjoy watching you play. I know you watch alot of films from games and how everything went. I have studied your swing and you are dragging your back foot and your hitting with just your arms. If you go back to films where you would get two or more hits and hit with alot of power you will see your back foot is planted and you were driving the ball well. When your back foot is dragging in your swing it is making you fall towards the plate and your bat is dropping causing you to pop up or not make good contact, It is just a thought. I hope the rest of the season goes great for you.

you are striding way to early on almost every pitch and that is causing you to step in the bucket. I can’t believe the hitting coach doesn’t have a drill to help you cure that problem. We did in Jr high. Put a bat handle behind you right foot during BP- Good luck the rest of the season———go Astros.

I’m an 8 year old baseball player from Louisiana. I love the Astros and love watching you play. My grandparents bought tickets for the Astros game on August 30 and I picked out the seats near the right field area. I will be at the early bird tour and hope to meet you. 2 years ago I was NOT a baseball fan of any kind. My hubby got me to watching y’all on TV early last season. From that momment I was hooked! Then I noticed a young player…YOU! I have now become an Astro’s fan and a Hunter “FAN”ATIC! My hubby thinks it is very cute that I have a fan crush on you, but last season my 7 year old daughter said…”Mommy, you can’t like Hunter you are already married.” I laughed really hard and told her that it was ok with your daddy because it keeps mommy occupied! I went to the game when they gave away Hunter Pence bobbleheads and made my hubby stand in line 2 housr before the gates opened so I could get one. Then, this is what made it a perfect day… my best friends son gave me your rookie card over the summer, You signed it for me!!! I tell everybody that I have Hunter Pence’s rookie card signed! Thank you for being so awesome on and off the field.

i got to meet you at a game earlier this summer. I wanted to take a second and say how refreshing I find someone who plays the game with your attitude. You are always snmiling and having fun doing what you do and I admire that and wish more people in general (not just players) had that same attitude in their daily lives.

Hunter, I went to Clear Lake HS (south of Houston) in the 70’s and graduated with a girl named Carolyn Pence. She had a younger brother Britt that graduated in 1979. Their Dad worked for Friendswood Development. Are they any relation to you?
