I, like many I’m sure, find these bios to be incredibly difficult to write. Deciding what people need or want to know about me is no small task. For example, do people want to know that I am a chronic nail biter, of that I had to switch to decaf coffee despite every bone in my body fighting the very idea? Or would people rather know my credentials, my background, or what it is that gives me any reason or business to be writing about anything important? So I have finally sat down at my computer with a glass of wine, channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw, to decide what it is that b5 readers should know about me.
The Credentials: Growing up I always wanted to be a teacher, save for a short period of time when I knew I was destined to be an auto mechanic. I was eventually schooled and trained to be a teacher, and I did teach for a short while. A very short while. I then moved in to the social work field, and eventually became a breastfeeding advocate where I finally discovered my first spark, my first professional passion…health. Through that experience I learned a great deal about the health care industry including the importance of good, culturally sound physician education, the benefit of electronic health records, the influence of Big industry, and of course the brilliance of breastfeeding. On the heels of that experience, I am now a graduate student in public health, with a focus on maternal and child health.
The Random: I was raised on TV and black and white movies. As a youngster I struggled with insomnia, so many late nights were spent watching Nick-at-Nite, infomericals, and old movies on AMC. TV was always big in my family. So big, in fact, that my mom once told me that she never felt the need to have “the sex talk” with me because she figured I was learning enough from Roseanne. I mention my love of television and film so that readers are not surprised when the occasional pop culture reference sneaks in to a post or two. Though I no longer have cable (a refusal based on the ridiculous prices and lack of package choice), I watch a lot of Netflix so you can bet a Battlestar Galactica or Dexter reference will be making its way in somewhere.
The Photo: There isn’t one because it is nearly impossible for me to take a decent photo.
